Every serious writer deserves a desk of their own.

Kathana did not begin as a product. It began at a filmmaker's own writing desk.

Kathana was born from a filmmaker's need. Built so that every writer can begin their story.

Kathana was started by Manju S Padmanabh, an independent Kannada filmmaker, editor and director from rural Karnataka, based in Bengaluru. Writing his own films in Kannada and English, he wanted a screenwriting home that was affordable, private and rooted in Indian languages — so he built one. What began as a private tool for his own films soon found its place with directors and writers across Karnataka.

Within Every Writer's Reach
What we believe
Great stories come from everywhere. The desk to write them should be open to everyone.
What Kathana offers
Free throughout the beta. Pricing for the full release will be announced later, with individual writers paying only a small, accessible amount. Companies that profit from films written with Kathana need a commercial license.
Made for Indian Languages
What we believe
Indian cinema thinks in many languages. Every script deserves to be written, shaped and printed with care, with conjuncts intact and text you can select.
What Kathana offers
Write in Indian languages alongside English, with the same precise typography everywhere: a 1.7 line-height floor, HarfBuzz shaping and selectable vector PDFs.
Private by Design
What we believe
An unproduced screenplay is a writer's most personal work. It belongs on the writer's own computer.
What Kathana offers
Your screenplay never leaves your machine. Your Kathana account stores only your identity and Beta access status — it never holds, syncs, or uploads a single word of your script.
Open Files, Always Yours
What we believe
Your screenplay should stay readable and portable for as long as you want it, today and decades from now.
What Kathana offers
Plain, open UTF-8 JSON that any text editor can read, with export to Final Draft, Fountain, Word and PDF at any time, even if a license lapses.

What Kathana Will Never Do

  • Never uploads your script. Your screenplay stays on your computer, so we cannot read it, monetise it or leak it.
  • Never writes for you. No text generation, no dialogue suggestions, no silent rewriting of your words.
  • Never locks your files. Your files open in any text editor and export to the industry's formats.

Kathana exists so that every serious writer can write their screenplay, whatever their means.

The Three Worlds Doctrine

Kathana is built on one unshakeable rule: your creative work, your account and the software releases are kept apart on purpose.

💻
World 1: The Writer's Work
100% Local · Never Uploaded

Lives on your personal hard drive. Your screenplay is never uploaded, synced or sent anywhere — not to us, not to anyone.

  • 🔒 .kathana UTF-8 JSON Project Files (remains locally with writer)
  • 🛡️ Rolling Verified AutoBackups (newest 30 kept by default)
  • 📄 Vector PDF, Word, Final Draft (.fdx) & Fountain Exports
  • 🚫 NEVER leaves your machine — no cloud storage, no remote backups, no AI analysis
📦
World 3: The Release System
Public Releases

Release notes and installer checksums published by JAGNAAM PICTURES. Installers are completely public and free for anyone to download with no account or email required — and no screenplay data is ever involved.

  • 📦 Desktop installers for macOS, Windows & Linux with SHA-256 checksums
  • 📝 Release notes and version history (Kathana Beta v0.1.0)
  • 🚫 No account or email needed to download. Ever.

Built for the Languages You Think In

Indian cinema is multilingual by nature. Kathana treats Indian scripts with first-class elegance—never clipping conjuncts or rasterizing text into blurry images.

ರವಿ ಮೌನವಾಗಿ ಕುಳಿತು ಕಥೆಯ ಪುಟಗಳನ್ನು ತಿರುವಿ ಹಾಕುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾನೆ.
✨ Kathana 1.7 Floor Active: Notice how subscript conjuncts (vattu: ರ್ಣ, ಕ್ತ) and upper vowel signs have full vertical clearance without touching adjacent lines.
📏
1.7 Line-Height Safety Floor
Automatically gives subscript consonants (vattu) and vowel signs (matras) the breathing room they require, eliminating vertical clipping entirely.
⚡
Phonetic Typing (Alt+K)
Think in Kannada, type in Roman letters. Instantly transliterate intuitive QWERTY keystrokes into broadcast-ready Unicode text.
📑
KPDF Vector Engine
TrueType font subsetting and HarfBuzz text shaping deliver razor-sharp, searchable, and selectable vector PDFs—not scanned page pictures.

Writers' Common Questions

Real answers to the questions working writers, directors, and film students ask before trusting a new tool.

Will film festivals, production houses, and competitions accept PDFs from Kathana? +
Yes, unconditionally. Kathana adheres strictly to international 1-page-per-minute industry standards: Courier 12pt at 10 characters per inch, 6 lines per vertical inch, and standard 8.5″ × 11″ page geometry. Exported PDFs contain selectable, searchable vector text with correct page numbering.
Can I import my existing screenplays from Final Draft, Fountain, or Word? +
Yes. Kathana includes native importers for Final Draft (.fdx), Fountain (.fountain), Microsoft Word (.docx), and Scrite (.scrite). Scene headings, character cues, dialogue, and parentheticals are mapped cleanly into the canonical format.
What happens if I travel or write completely off the grid without internet? +
Kathana is strictly offline-first. Writing, editing, saving, auto-backing up, and exporting local screenplay files do not depend on an active internet connection, and your 14-day trial runs entirely offline on your computer. An internet connection is only used for account-related operations, such as receiving your 6-digit OTP code, authenticating your session, and verifying Beta entitlement when required. A signed-in Kathana session can reopen and continue working offline. Furthermore, if a session ends while the editor is open, your work remains open so you can continue writing during that session.
Does Kathana contain any AI that reads, suggests, or trains on my dialogue? +
Zero AI text generation. Kathana never harvests your dialogue, never analyzes your story for machine learning, and will never silently rewrite your words. We believe in pure human authorial integrity.
How will pricing work once Version 1 is released? +
Kathana Beta v0.1.0 is completely free. Pricing for the full release will be announced later, with individual writers paying only a small, accessible amount. Studios and production companies will pay a standard commercial license. Local project access and core file operations are not dependent on cloud storage.
How does the 14-day trial work, and what happens when it ends? +
You can download Kathana publicly without an account and use it free for 14 days with full functionality and no artificial writing restrictions. The trial runs locally on your computer, with no trial tracking sent to Supabase. When the 14-day trial ends, simply create or sign in to your free Kathana account inside the app to continue writing. Your existing screenplay files remain on your computer — they can always be opened and exported to supported formats, remaining read-only for editing until you sign in.
Which computers does Kathana Beta v0.1.0 support? +
The v0.1.0 Beta is available as a macOS (Apple Silicon) .dmg, a Windows 64-bit (x64) installer and a Linux 64-bit (x86_64) AppImage. Intel Macs are not supported in this build. Linux compatibility can vary by distribution and system configuration.
Why does my computer show a warning when I first open Kathana? +
This early Beta is not signed with an Apple Developer ID and is not notarized by Apple, so macOS shows a security warning on first launch (open System Settings → Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway; step-by-step help: macOS Installation Help ↗). Windows may also show a SmartScreen prompt for a new app. Download Kathana only from the official release page and compare the SHA-256 checksum of your installer with the published value.

Dear Writer,

Writing a film is hard enough. Finding the budget, pitching to producers, and bringing actors onto a set are battles you will fight soon enough. The software you use to write your story should never be another wall standing in your way.

I built Kathana because I needed it for my own films. I wanted a quiet, distraction-free room where Kannada and English exist side-by-side with equal respect, where my scripts stay on my own hard drive, and where formatting meets international cinema standards effortlessly.

This is your desk now. Take a seat, open a new page, and tell the story only you can tell.

Warmly,
Manju S Padmanabh
